THIS BOOK HAS BEEN UPDATED. XSLT PROGRAMMER'S REFERENCE, 2ND EDITION (ISBN 1861005067), IS AVAILABLE TO ORDER NOW

XSL (eXtensible Stylesheet Language) is the styling language to match XML. At the most basic level it allows the programmer to manipulate XML on a template model - XSL provides the template to fit XML data into for displaying on a web page. However, it is capable of much more than that, and allows programmers to selectively query, display and manipulate data, perform scripting-like operations on the XML document and transform it into pure HTML for use on browsers which don't support XML.

XML, the Extensible Markup Language, is the next-generation markup language for the Web. It provides a more structured (and therefore more powerful) medium than HTML, allowing us to define new document types and stylesheets as needed. Although the generic tags of HTML are sufficient for everyday text, XML gives us a way to add rich, well-defined markup to electronic documents. The XML Pocket Reference is both a handy introduction to XML terminology and syntax, and a quick reference to XML instructions, attributes, entities, and datatypes. Although XML itself is complex, its basic concepts are simple. This small book combines a perfect tutorial for learning the basics of XML with a reference to the XML and XSL specifications. The new edition introduces information on XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) and Xpath.

XML PROGRAMMING is the best place to find detailed instructions and insights on how to take advantage of XML and the Microsoft Visual Studio development environment to create extensible, end-to-end applications. Taking an architectural approach, the authors of the book carefully describe the XML hooks to be found in the next generation of Visual Studio and the .NET platform, plus how XML works with other Microsoft products such as Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft BizTalk Server 2000.
